Quick answer

Men need at least 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight a day, about 50 g at 140 lb and 70 g at 200 lb (Harvard Nutrition Source, Protein). Athletes are cited at about 1.2 to 2.0 g per kg (NIH ODS, Exercise & Athletic Performance). Protein deficiency is uncommon in healthy US adults.

How much protein do men need a day?

Men need at least 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight a day. That is the recommended minimum (Harvard Nutrition Source, Protein).

Harvard's Nutrition Source gives about 50 g for a 140 lb adult and 70 g for a 200 lb adult. Protein can supply 10% to 35% of daily calories. Many healthy US adults already eat more than enough, and deficiency is uncommon.

How do you work out your own number?

Divide your weight in pounds by 2.2 to get kilograms, then multiply by 0.8 for the minimum.

A 180 lb man is about 82 kg, so the minimum is about 65 g a day. Athletes are cited at 1.2 to 2.0 g per kg (NIH ODS, Exercise & Athletic Performance), which is about 98 to 163 g for the same man.

Do men who lift need more protein?

Athletes are cited at about 1.2 to 2.0 g per kg a day (NIH ODS, Exercise & Athletic Performance). The minimum is the floor for everyone else.

The source we cite does not set a number for casual lifters. It does say protein is only one piece. Muscle-strengthening on 2 or more days a week is the other (CDC, Adult Physical Activity Guidelines). Ask a doctor or dietitian about your own case, especially with a medical condition.

How does protein compare with a supplement like SodaPeak?

Food protein is measured in tens of grams. A whole SodaPeak serving is one 1,200 mg blend, which is 1.2 g across eight ingredients.

By label order, the first line can weigh at most 1,200 mg and the eighth at most 150 mg. Even a full 1.2 g would be under one fortieth of a 50 g protein minimum. The bar splits the blend eight ways.

1,200 mg blend · eight lines · 0 single amounts printed · an even split would be 150 mg each (21 CFR 101.36 (Supplement Facts, proprietary blends))

Does SodaPeak replace protein?

No. SodaPeak is a dietary supplement whose bottle says only "Supports Healthy Muscle*". It is not a protein source.

FAQ01

SodaPeak questions people ask

How many grams of protein is 0.8 g per kg?

Multiply your weight in kilograms by 0.8. A 180 lb man is about 82 kg, so the minimum is about 65 g a day. Harvard gives about 50 g at 140 lb and 70 g at 200 lb.

Can men eat too little protein?

It is uncommon. Harvard notes protein deficiency is rare in healthy US adults, and many already eat more than enough. Ongoing fatigue or weight loss still deserves a doctor visit.

Is 1.2 to 2.0 g of protein per kg only for athletes?

That range is the one the NIH sheet cites for athletes. For other men, the recommended minimum is 0.8 g per kg. A doctor or dietitian can say what suits your health and training.
