What does a proprietary blend on a supplement label mean?
A proprietary blend is a group of ingredients listed together under one name, with one combined weight. Under 21 CFR 101.36, the amount on the blend line is the weight of all its ingredients together, not of each (21 CFR 101.36 (Supplement Facts, proprietary blends)).
The ingredients sit indented beneath the blend name, from most to least by weight, with a "Daily Value not established" footnote.
SodaPeak shows a "Test Boost Proprietary Blend" of 1,200 mg with eight lines.
| Item | On the label? |
|---|---|
| Blend name and total weight | Yes (1,200 mg) |
| Each ingredient's name | Yes, most to least by weight |
| Each ingredient's weight | No |
| Daily Value | "Not established" |
How does ingredient order show the weight in a blend?
Order sets a ceiling. Line k of n in a blend can weigh at most the total divided by k, because no line can outweigh the ones before it.
Example: three lines at 400 mg already use 1,200 mg, so line 3 cannot pass 400 mg. They are limits, not lab results.
Line 1 can be as heavy as the whole blend, 1,200 mg. Each later line can weigh at most 1,200 mg divided by its place: line 8 at most 150 mg.
- 1. Horny goat weedat most 1,200 mg
- 2. Tongkat aliat most 600 mg
- 3. Saw palmettoat most 400 mg
- 4. Nettle rootat most 300 mg
- 5. Wild yamat most 240 mg
- 6. Sarsaparillaat most 200 mg
- 7. Orchic substanceat most 171 mg
- 8. Boronat most 150 mg
Arithmetic from the label (1,200 mg blend, lines listed most to least by weight) and 21 CFR 101.36 (21 CFR 101.36 (Supplement Facts, proprietary blends)). A ceiling is the most a line could weigh, not what it weighs, and plates are drawn by area-friendly height, not to scale. The even split is an illustration, not a claim.
Why do brands use proprietary blends?
The usual reason given is trade secrecy: a brand keeps its ratios private. The cost to you is that you cannot compare any line with a studied dose.
The NIH sheet warns that proprietary blends make effects unpredictable (NIH ODS, Exercise & Athletic Performance).

FAQ01
SodaPeak questions people ask
Does a proprietary blend have to list each ingredient?
Yes. It must list every ingredient inside the blend, in descending order of weight, but it shows only the combined weight (21 CFR 101.36 (Supplement Facts, proprietary blends)).
Can a proprietary blend hide a small dose?
It can. Only the total shows, so a late line may be tiny. SodaPeak's last line can weigh at most 150 mg of the 1,200 mg (21 CFR 101.36 (Supplement Facts, proprietary blends)).
Is a proprietary blend legal?
Yes. The FDA labeling guide has a section on proprietary blends in the Supplement Facts panel (FDA, Dietary Supplement Labeling Guide). Legal does not mean amounts are known.
How do I work out the most an ingredient can weigh in a blend?
Take the blend total and divide it by the ingredient's place in the list. Third of eight in a 1,200 mg blend: 1,200 divided by 3 is 400 mg at most.
