Saw Palmetto: What Does It Do for Men?

Quick answer

Saw palmetto is the fruit extract of a palm, sold for urinary and prostate comfort. NCCIH says it is probably not helpful for urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostate. It is the third line in the SodaPeak blend, at most 400 mg per serving by label order.

What does saw palmetto do for men?

Saw palmetto is the fruit of a palm, Serenoa repens, and the evidence says it probably does not help urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostate (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto).

A 2023 review of 27 studies found little or no benefit when it was used alone. Two NIH-funded trials, one at a standard dose and one at up to three times that dose, did not improve symptoms.

Urinary symptoms of BPHProbably not helpful
Higher dosesUp to three times standard did no better
Prostatitis, hair lossToo limited to conclude
PSA readingsNo change appears

Does saw palmetto have side effects?

Saw palmetto side effects are mostly mild: stomach upset, diarrhea, fatigue, headache, lower sex drive and a runny nose (MSK, Saw Palmetto).

Case reports describe serious events, such as surgical bleeding, blood in the urine, pancreatitis and severe liver damage. They also suggest added bleeding with warfarin, other blood thinners and clopidogrel.

NCCIH adds that it may be unsafe in pregnancy or breastfeeding.

How much saw palmetto is in SodaPeak?

At most 400 mg per serving by label order, and likely less. Saw palmetto is line 3 of 8, so 1,200 divided by 3 is the ceiling.

An even split would be 150 mg. The trials used a standard dose and up to three times that, but the label gives no amount, so a match cannot be checked.

Why do prostate symptoms need a doctor?

Prostate symptoms such as a weak stream or trips to the toilet at night have causes a supplement cannot sort out, so a doctor should check them.

PSA is a protein that benign conditions such as BPH can raise. Finasteride and dutasteride lower it, so tell your doctor about every product you use (NCI, PSA Test Fact Sheet).

Keep taking prescribed prostate medicine exactly as directed.

FAQ01

SodaPeak questions people ask

Does saw palmetto change PSA test results?

It does not appear to, according to NCCIH (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto). Finasteride and dutasteride do lower PSA, so a doctor should know about every medicine and supplement you take (NCI, PSA Test Fact Sheet).

Can saw palmetto help hair loss?

Not shown. NCCIH says the evidence for hair loss was too limited to conclude anything (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto). SodaPeak makes no hair claim on its label.

Is saw palmetto safe with blood thinners?

Ask first. Case reports suggest added bleeding with warfarin, other blood thinners and clopidogrel (MSK, Saw Palmetto). Your doctor or pharmacist can say whether the pairing is safe for you.

How much saw palmetto do studies use?

Two NIH-funded trials used a standard dose and up to three times that dose, with no better symptoms (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto). SodaPeak prints no saw palmetto amount, so a match cannot be checked.
