Sleep and Testosterone: How Much Sleep Matters?
Sleep and testosterone are linked: in one small trial, a week of 5-hour nights cut daytime testosterone in ten healthy young men by about 10% to 15% (Leproult & Van Cauter, JAMA 2011 (sleep and testosterone)). It is a single, small study, not proof for every man. Adults need 7 or more hours of sleep (CDC, About Sleep).

Does sleep affect testosterone?
Yes, in one small trial: sleeping about five hours a night for eight nights lowered testosterone in healthy young men (Leproult & Van Cauter, JAMA 2011 (sleep and testosterone)).
The ten men first slept 10 hours a night for three nights. Then their sleep was cut to 5 hours for eight nights. Average total sleep fell from about 8 hours 55 minutes to 4 hours 48 minutes.
Self-rated vigor also dropped over the short nights.
How much does short sleep lower testosterone?
In that trial, daytime testosterone fell from 18.4 to 16.5 nmol/L, roughly 10% (Leproult & Van Cauter, JAMA 2011 (sleep and testosterone)).
The authors describe a 10% to 15% decline, and levels from 2 PM to 10 PM fell about 13%.
| Measure | Result |
|---|---|
| Men studied | 10 healthy men, mean age 24.3 |
| Nights at 5 hours | 8 |
| Daytime testosterone | 18.4 down to 16.5 nmol/L |
| Afternoon and evening | About 13% lower |
What does the sleep research not show?
It does not show what happens to older men, to men who sleep 6 hours, or to men who take supplements. It was a very small study of young men (Leproult & Van Cauter, JAMA 2011 (sleep and testosterone)).
It also did not test a cure. Nothing here says more sleep fixes a low result. Low testosterone is confirmed by symptoms plus early-morning blood tests, so see testosterone and aging.

See packsHow many hours of sleep do adults need?
Adults aged 18 to 60 need 7 or more hours of sleep a day. People 61 to 64 need 7 to 9 hours, and people 65 and older need 7 to 8 (CDC, About Sleep).
Too little sleep is also a common cause of tiredness (MedlinePlus, Fatigue), which is covered in low energy causes. A day built around sleep looks like this.
- Breakfast, about 7:30
The capsules, if you take SodaPeak. The listing says after a meal; the label gives no time. A fixed anchor makes it easy to remember. Prescribed medicine keeps its own schedule.
- Protein at meals
Most adults need about 0.8 g of protein per kilogram a day, and more is not proven to build more muscle without training. Food covers this better than a capsule.
- Lift in the evening
Adults need muscle-strengthening work on 2 or more days a week, plus 150 minutes of moderate activity. Training moves strength; a capsule does not.
- Night, 7 or more hours
Adults need at least 7 hours of sleep. In one small trial, a week of 5-hour nights lowered young men's testosterone by 10 to 15%.
Activity guidance from CDC (CDC, Adult Physical Activity Guidelines); sleep from CDC (CDC, About Sleep); the sleep and testosterone trial is Leproult and Van Cauter, JAMA 2011 (Leproult & Van Cauter, JAMA 2011 (sleep and testosterone)); protein from Harvard's Nutrition Source (Harvard Nutrition Source, Protein). The time for the capsules is a suggestion; follow your label.
Can a supplement replace sleep?
No supplement replaces sleep. SodaPeak is a dietary supplement whose bottle says only "Supports Healthy Muscle*", and no trial has tested it.
The label lists a 1,200 mg blend of eight ingredients and no stimulant. Read how to take SodaPeak. Keep taking prescribed medicine.

FAQ01
SodaPeak questions people ask
How many hours of sleep keep testosterone normal?
The trial we cite did not set a number for normal testosterone. It showed that 5-hour nights lowered levels in young men. CDC advises adults 18 to 60 to get 7 or more hours of sleep.
Can one bad night lower testosterone?
The trial we cite studied eight nights of 5-hour sleep, not one bad night. It found a 10% to 15% drop over that week. It cannot tell us what a single short night does.
Does poor sleep cause low testosterone symptoms?
It can lower testosterone in a small trial, and it also causes tiredness on its own. Months of symptoms still need a doctor and two morning blood tests to sort out the cause.
