Does Lifting Weights Increase Testosterone?
The sources we cite do not say whether lifting weights increase testosterone, so we make no claim. What they do support: adults need muscle-strengthening work on at least 2 days a week (CDC, Adult Physical Activity Guidelines). Training, food and sleep matter for strength, and no study ties a supplement to it.

Does lifting weights increase testosterone?
We cannot say. None of the sources we cite measured testosterone after lifting, so we will not claim a rise or a spike.
The research sources we cite agree on other things. Lifting is part of basic adult health, and strength comes from training, food and sleep. If someone gives you a number for the hormone effect, ask for the study.
How often should adults lift weights?
Adults need muscle-strengthening activity on at least 2 days a week, working all major muscle groups (CDC, Adult Physical Activity Guidelines).
That means legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms. CDC also asks for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week, and says some activity beats none.
| Habit | Target |
|---|---|
| Muscle-strengthening | 2 or more days a week (CDC, Adult Physical Activity Guidelines) |
| Moderate aerobic activity | 150 minutes a week |
| Sleep | 7 or more hours for ages 18 to 60 (CDC, About Sleep) |
What really builds strength: lifting, food or sleep?
All three work together, and the sources we cite support each one for health.
Lifting gives the muscles a reason to adapt. Athletes are cited at about 1.2 to 2.0 g of protein per kg a day, and creatine is the best-studied performance supplement (NIH ODS, Exercise & Athletic Performance). Sleep is the third leg. See sleep and testosterone.

No trial in our sources shows that they do. In trials, DHEA and androstenedione showed no strength or lean-mass gains, and Tribulus showed no effect on strength or sex hormones (NIH ODS, Exercise & Athletic Performance).
The same source warns that proprietary blends make effects unpredictable. A day that puts the proven things first looks like this.
- Breakfast, about 7:30
The capsules, if you take SodaPeak. The listing says after a meal; the label gives no time. A fixed anchor makes it easy to remember. Prescribed medicine keeps its own schedule.
- Protein at meals
Most adults need about 0.8 g of protein per kilogram a day, and more is not proven to build more muscle without training. Food covers this better than a capsule.
- Lift in the evening
Adults need muscle-strengthening work on 2 or more days a week, plus 150 minutes of moderate activity. Training moves strength; a capsule does not.
- Night, 7 or more hours
Adults need at least 7 hours of sleep. In one small trial, a week of 5-hour nights lowered young men's testosterone by 10 to 15%.
Activity guidance from CDC (CDC, Adult Physical Activity Guidelines); sleep from CDC (CDC, About Sleep); the sleep and testosterone trial is Leproult and Van Cauter, JAMA 2011 (Leproult & Van Cauter, JAMA 2011 (sleep and testosterone)); protein from Harvard's Nutrition Source (Harvard Nutrition Source, Protein). The time for the capsules is a suggestion; follow your label.
