Nettle Root: What Is It Used For?

Quick answer

Nettle root is the root of stinging nettle, used in traditional herbal medicine and often paired with saw palmetto. Research is limited, and single-herb trials give no firm results. It is the fourth line in the SodaPeak blend, at most 300 mg per serving by label order.

What is nettle root used for?

Nettle root is used in herbal practice mainly for urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostate, and the root is the part of the plant most often used (MSK, Nettle).

The data are limited. A combined saw palmetto and nettle product reduced night-time urination more than placebo, but single-herb nettle root trials are small and report no firm results.

What are the cautions with nettle root?

Nettle root has case reports of low blood sugar, male breast enlargement, nipple discharge and hives (MSK, Nettle).

Animal studies suggest possible added effects with diuretics and blood pressure drugs, and possible effects on drugs processed by CYP450 enzymes. The clinical meaning is unknown.

Because the evidence is thin, the safe reading is to ask before combining it with diabetes, blood pressure or water-pill medicines.

How much nettle root is in SodaPeak?

At most 300 mg per serving by label order. Nettle root is line 4 of 8, so 1,200 divided by 4 gives the ceiling (21 CFR 101.36 (Supplement Facts, proprietary blends)).

An even split would be 150 mg. The one positive trial used a saw palmetto and nettle combination. SodaPeak holds both, but with hidden amounts, so the two cannot be equated.

Is nettle root a reason to buy a blend?

Not on the evidence alone. Nettle root has no sourced link to muscle or testosterone, and its main trial involved a different product.

Read the nettle root ingredient page and the ingredient list. Related: saw palmetto.

SodaPeak questions people ask

Is the nettle in SodaPeak root or leaf?

No. They are different plant parts, and the root is the part most often used (MSK, Nettle). The SodaPeak label lists nettle extract from the root.

Does nettle root affect blood sugar in the blog sources?

Case reports describe low blood sugar with nettle (MSK, Nettle). People who take diabetes medicine should ask a doctor before using a product that holds it.

Does nettle root act as a diuretic?

Animal studies suggest possible added effects with diuretics, so it may add to a water pill (MSK, Nettle). Whether that holds in people is unknown.

Does nettle root help the prostate on its own?

Not shown. A saw palmetto and nettle combination cut night-time urination in one trial, but single-herb nettle root trials gave no firm results (MSK, Nettle).
